“I often wonder how different church would be if there were hundreds of gang members in the congregation – I dream of that day.”

Tuhoe 'Bruno' Isaac in TRUE RED the life of an ex-mongrel mob gang leader

Hi

tuhoe_isaac (51K)   I spent my 46th birthday reading the book that the above quote was taken from. It was given to me by the Angel Tree National Co-ordinator as part of preparation for leading the SUPAkidz – Angel Tree (Scripture Union – Prison Fellowship) camp in Wellington at the end of this month. The book is about one man's journey into the Mongrel Mob gang and then how through various events and incidents he realises that the gang is a dead end road. And in his search he discovers God's love for him. The first two thirds of the book are very graphic about the mob activities and the time he spent in prison. As I read it I was reminded of what a privileged life I have had and how there are children in New Zealand whose lives are in chaos and it is no fault of theirs. Many of the children who will be coming to the SUPAKidz – Angel Tree camp may be similarly disadvantaged Please pray for me (and the team and campers) as I lead the camp. I will be way out of my comfort zone but know that God has called us to this new ministry.

I brought a gun with me

I visited six schools in three days to do Bible in Schools assemblies. I was doing the story of Gideon as a man of faith. I started by sharing what I had learnt while doing military service and then announced that I had brought a gun along with me. Well, there was a loud “Wow!!!' at every school, until I pulled out a plastic nerve gun. The wow then turned to laughter until I got a volunteer up to dismantle and reassemble the gun and try to beat my record. This was to illustrate that war is something very serious. But the loudest wow came when I told the story of how God kept telling Gideon he needed a smaller army because God wanted the Israelites to know that He had won the battle not themselves.
I then talked with the children about what this could mean for us. We talked about the value that God places in even the most insignificant person and how they can be used by God to do amazing things if they learn to listen to God

Red + Yellow = Orange

I attended a morning workshop on the Orange concept. Orange is an initiative developed by the rethink group looking at how churches and family may better complement what they do in children and young people's lives. I was inspired by the one statement that was made, “To act orange we have to think orange.”  When this is unpacked it is saying that  most churches talk about the important role of families in children's lives and families recognise that the church has a lot to offer, but unless we actually begin thinking orange in all aspects of church life then the move to the two group complementing each other never happen.
The rethink group has produced a lot of excellent resources to help church to think orange. And I was impressed by the way they have thought about how this can be implemented in any size church.

Check out what is orange for more information.

Another year has been added to my age. I didn't have a celebration other than a pancake breakfast with the family and then an extended family morning tea. Also I was spoilt with some biltong, droewors and other South African yummy munchies.
Things have been busy in the house as we have had two weekends with six children in the house as the cousins came to stay. And with James having broken his collar bone there have been a few visits to the Starship hospital for check-ups.

I can tie my own shoelaces now. I first learnt by Dad showing me how to tie the belt of my gown. I can now even tie it with my eyes closed.

When I heard the words, “He has a broken clavical – collar bone,” I knew that rugby was over for the season. The first week I thought I would die but three weeks later I am now playing soccer and touch rugby.
